"A ferocious re-take on a John Coltrane classic" - Melbourne International Jazz Festival

"What a wild ride" - Jazz Journal

Contemporary London jazz figurehead Tenderlonious tackles John Coltrane’s seminal 1961 masterpiece Africa/Brass.

Joining forces with Melbourne legends Horatio Luna (bass) and On-Ly (piano), alongside long-time collaborator Tim Carnegie (drums), the quartet set out to invoke the original’s groundbreaking brilliance while pushing its spiritual intensity forward.

Recorded during a pivotal era of global change, Africa/Brass (his first record on Impulse!) captured the sound of a continent in the midst of revolution, and  remains Coltrane’s ultimate foray into uncharted territory, influencing minimalists like Steve Reich and Terry Riley.

Using the original's melodies as a launching pad, the quartet dives deep into the music's trance-inducing roots to forge a fresh, boundary-pushing soundscape.

For Tenderlonious, it is a masterclass in modal discipline - a space where expansive scale exploration mirrors the meditative focus of Indian ragas: no divergence, just the scale and the search.

“One beautiful note means more than a thousand” - Tenderlonious

Debuting the Africa/Brass works at Melbourne Jazz festival - the quartet come to UK for a handful of dates. Album out now on 22a Records.
